Fiat Brand Records the Lowest C02 Emissions Rating in Europe for Fourth Straight Year

For the fourth straight year, Fiat brand automobiles has recorded the lowest level of carbon dioxide emissions (C02) for vehicles sold in Europe.  The automaker had an average measurement of 123.1 grams of C02 per kilometer -- a drop of 4.7 (g/km) from the previous year. Fiat Automobile Group also ranked first with a rating of 125.9 g/km.
Over the past four years, Fiat brand automobiles has reduced its C02 emissions an average of 10 percent from 137.3 to 123.1 -- a full four years ahead of the European Union target set for 130 g/km by 2015.
Recent technologies introduced by Fiat include the TwinAir engine, the world's most "ecological" turbo; alternate fuels including liquid propane gas (LPG); and eco:Drive application, an innovative technology that encourages driving that is more responsible and eco-compatible.
In the United States, the new Fiat 500 marks the introduction of Fiat Multiair fuel delivery system to North America.  Standard on the 1.4-liter engine in the Fiat 500, Multiair increase fuel economy by up to 10 percent and reduces emissions by 10 percent without any loss in power.
Many of Fiat's technical innovations in fuel delivery are grouped within the "Air Technologies" brand that helps provide solutions in an economical and low environmental impact without giving up the driving pleasure that is characteristic of Fiat brand cars.

Libyan rebels liberate Gaddafi’s custom Fiat 500

We've long been impressed by the vehicular ingenuity of the Libyan uprising, but as this photo of a dictator-approved Fiat 500 from the compound of Muammar Gaddafi shows, they weren't the only ones into customizing. UPDATE: They're pushing it because it's electric.
Beyond the ground effects kit, doorless entry and what appear to be custom badges, Gaddafi's 500 looks similar to the "yacht tender" custom 500 built by Castagna, with its roof still intact. The rebels also appear to have seized Gaddafi's custom golf cart, which will be less useful as a rolling rocket launcher, along with something far more weird: his photo scrapbook of former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Note to rebels: Don't put a black light on those Fiat seats.

UPDATE: Turns out this wasn't just custom bodywork, but a one-off, $130,000 Fiat 500 converted by Castagna to run on electricity — except for the air conditioner, which Gaddafi needed to be gas-powered, since he was driving an open-air car in the desert.

According to this Corriere Della Sera story dug up by commenters Manettino and Manik, the car was ordered from Castagna in 2009 by an intermediary — but it became clear as the car was built who it would be driven by, namely from touches such as hiding the charging port behing a badge showing Libya and an outline of Africa. The cost-no-object project stuffed enough lithium-ion batteries into the 500 to give it a range of 160 miles; special chargers could repower the batteries in 10 minutes.
The rebels might lack the plug or cord necessary to get the Electo-Petro-Dictator 500 moving again, but luckily there's a few ways to recharge an electric car without an outlet.

Fiat 500: Iconic Eco-Friendly 4-Seater Comes Stateside

By HOLLY REICH
Special to Bumper to Bumper

By the time you read this, you’ve probably seen the signage or heard the buzz about the 2012 Fiat 500, the quintessential Italian car, which has finally found its way to North America. For those who remember, the original Fiat 500, also known as the Cinquecento, made its mark more than half a century ago in Italy.

The 2012 Fiat 500 embodies the iconic qualities that make Italian design so intoxicating with smart, sophisticated and colorful styling. The tiny four-seater, which Fiat refers to as the automotive equivalent of an iPod, is entering a market that appeals to millennials, baby boomers and seniors. Plus, this new member of the small car segment embraces all the appeal of a reduced footprint with 10% greater fuel economy (30 city/38 highway for the manual, 27 city/34 highway for the automatic) and decreased CO2 emissions of 10%.

The 500 comes in 14 zesty colors (both new and vintage) that include: rosso (red), giallo (yellow), rame (copper), verde oliva (olive green) and mocha latte (beige). The pleasingly plump 500 still retains the Fiat mustache (signature whiskers and logo face) because, as one designer says, “It's just too perfect.” The look is completed with large wheel arches, touches of tastefully applied chrome and retro inspired circular headlamps.

In the cabin, the 500 stays true to minimalistic Italian design--simple and functional. The interior is bright with shiny color-coded plastics “to keep the visual going on inside,” buttons highlighted with chromed rings, simple chromed hook door handles that mimic the vintage model and a redesigned center console for beefier drinks. The two-toned seats, a throwback to the 1960’s Cinquecento, are designed to accommodate the larger American.

Of course, the 500 is equipped with connectivity technology including Fiat’s BLUE & ME hands free communication with phone and iPod integration and a diminutive TomTom navigation system.

The car comes in three flavors - Pop, Sport and Lounge - with a choice of 14 seat and material combos and 500 additional accessories to amp it up. The Pop model features manual transmission and 15” wheels; the Sport adds red painted brake calipers, chromed exhaust tips, gloss black window trim and a sport tuned suspension; and the Lounge jazzes it up with more chrome, a fixed glass roof and more luxury elements.

But, bottom line, it’s going to be the marketing that will propel this micro car’s success. Laura Soave, Head of Fiat Brand North America, hired in March 2010 to head the company’s return to North America, is intent on blending European culture with the needs of American consumers. She comes by it naturally. Soave is the daughter of Italian immigrants who spent her childhood summers near Rome; the fluent Italian also has cousins and uncles who worked at Fiat's factory in Piedimonte San Germano, Italy.

Soave is invested in creating a small dealer network and positioning the Fiat 500 "Cinquecento" minicar as a trendy brand for the smartphone generation.

In late 2010, Soave delivered half-dozen Cinquecentos to the world-renowned Art Basel show in Miami Beach where a group of Italian artists and University of Miami students decorated the cars. It’s this type of hands on initiative that Soave feels will capture younger consumers.

"It's important for people to touch and feel," she said. "TV commercials are great for entertainment purposes, but it doesn't really get you to experience the brand.

"American consumers want new stuff, and you need to constantly evolve with them.”

In fact, at Milan Fashion Week, Fiat teamed up with Gucci to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and Gucci’s 90th anniversary.

The Gucci Fiat is black or white with the designer’s trademark green and red stripes festooning gearshift, floor mats and leather on the seat belts. Both fabric and leather seats will also feature Gucci’s Guccissima print. And, oh yes, the Gucci key chain is the necessary item.

It seems that Soave’s position at Fiat was in the stars. After taking the job at Fiat, Soave’s parents found a photo, taken during a trip to Italy, of 3-year-old Laura sitting on a Cinquecento.
"My dad brought it to me and said, 'Look at this, it's destiny,'" she said.

A Measure of the 500's Broad Appeal!

Caitlin Hemby, 16, hasn't driven much. Robert Latimer, 88, has. Both wanted Fiat 500 minicars and bought the first two sold by Fiat of Lakeside in Macomb Township, Mich., near Detroit.

Latimer is a retired Chrysler modeler and prototype maker who farms several hundred acres near Richmond, Mich., northeast of Detroit. His interest was piqued by what he'd read about the 500, so, he says, in March, "When they opened the dealership I went down to buy one."
Now, says the 6-foot-tall Latimer, "I make plans to go where I don't even want to go, just to drive it."

Hemby was to get her first car as a birthday present last September, but says she waited for the 500's arrival in March because she couldn't find anything else with the Fiat's blend of fuel efficiency and charming looks.  "I love driving it," says the 5-foot-2-inch-tall junior at Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Mich. "If I were a car, this is what I'd be."

A short teen new to driving and a tall farmer who's a veteran of everything from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to trucks and tractors — Fiat U.S. chief Laura Soave hopes that range is not a quirk, but rather a measure of the 500's broad appeal.
It needs to be broad. The little car, which starts at $16,000 and is the first Fiat sold in the U.S. since 1983, is the foundation for the Italian brand's return.
"The 500 sets the stage," Soave says.
More has been done with less. Volkswagen began in the U.S. selling two Beetles in 1949.

Is The 2012 Fiat 500 New York City’s New “It” Car?

Fiat 500 Abarth

It’s no secret that Fiat’s pushing its 500 as a chic urban runabout, but the company’s really striving to resonate with drivers in New York City. The automaker launched much of its market research and marketing campaigns in the Big Apple, and even waited for the New York International Auto Show to launch the Fiat 500 Cabrio in our market. But one question remains: does the pint-sized Italian hatchback resonate with New Yorkers?

The New York Observer, a weekly paper based in the city¸ interviewed a handful of new Fiat 500 owners, including a few who were previous owners of a Mini Cooper, long considered one of NYC’s “it” cars. Among those who made the switch is Joel Karie, who doesn’t mind that his Tropicalia Yellow, sport model 500 is a bit smaller than the Cooper. “I can get more bang for my buck this way,” said Karie, who points out that his 500 is about $5000 cheaper than a comparable Cooper. “I feel very comfortable in this car. It’s like an Apple computer. Aesthetics and design can make something boring fun.”
One can argue that the Mini is just as fun with its quirky interior bits. But in a city packed with Italian immigrants, the Fiat 500 can tug at the nostalgic heartstrings of Italian-Americans like no other car can.
“I’m Italian. It’s my first car, I learned to drive with a Cinquecento when I was 15 years old,” said Claudio Coronas, proprietor of DOC Wine Bar and DOC Wine Shop, both located in Williamsburg. “For me, maybe it’s something that’s more than a car. It reminds me of when I was younger. When you drive a Mini, it’s good; when you drive a Cinquecento, it’s passion.
So has the Fiat 500 unseated the Mini Cooper as NYC’s “it” car? It’s probably too early to say and it wouldn’t be fair to make a decision based on The Observer’s collection of anecdotes skewed in the 500’s favor. But for a city that embraces the latest and greatest in design, fashion, and all things Italian, it’s hard to argue that the Fiat 500 encompasses all that into a (small) package.

FIAT 500- Safety

Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The federal government and the insurance industry have not tested the 2012 FIAT 500, but this mini car does come with a number of safety features. The FIAT has seven airbags: driver and multi-stage front-passenger advance airbags, drivers-knee air bag – a rarity – full-length side-air bags and standard seat-mounted side pelvic-thorax air bags. The FIAT 500 also has standard electronic stability control, electronic brakeforce distribution, an anti-lock brake system and a traction control system.
While US organizations have not tested the FIAT 500, the European NCAP has tested the European 500. This model is different than the one built for US consumers, but scores should give you some idea of how safe this vehicle is. In crash tests the 2007 FIAT 500 (the most recent year scores are available) received five out of five stars for adult occupant protection.

Gaddafi’s Fiat 500 seized by the Libyan rebels

Libyan rebels have found a particularly original Fiat model in the leader’s huge Bab al-Azizia compound.

Customized by a company in Milan , the vehicle is an electric Fiat 500 Series Capri, bright green with gold trimmings.
For the price of € 200 000, the Colonel had unusual desires, ranging from equipment and materials inside to the replacement of the Fiat logo with a map of Africa , where Libya appears in green.
The first step was the electrification of the model by installing a 34 kW electric engine instead of an internal combustion drive train. Gaddafi’s car was equipped with two sets of batteries, which gave it a range of 260 kilometers.
The interior had beige upholstery with green stitching and sand-colored ceiling. Ornaments such as The Lion of the Desert, a compass-like chart which is a symbol of the Libyan society and the image of the African continent were present inside.
As in the case of 500 Castagna, the model had no side doors or tailgate cover and the ceiling was replaced with an item of cloth.

Fiat 500C Abarth

Fiat 500C Abarth

The brand new Fiat 500C Abarth is the result of developments in both style and performance. This is not the first time that Abarth has undertaken the performance tuning of a convertible and the company has used all its past experience to improve both stylistic and technical factors.
While the eye is inevitably drawn to the new body finish, based on elegant two-tone colour schemes, the extended, dynamic-looking spoiler instantly reminds you that the Fiat 500C Abarth is first and foremost a high class sportster. In addition to enhancing the aggressive appearance of the 500C, the spoiler effectively boosts CZ loading and creates a smoother air flow.
The looks of the Fiat 500C Abarth have also benefited from the new design 17" diamond finished alloy wheels, including the sought-after diamond finished 5 petal white wheels.
Another strong point of the Fiat 500C Abarth is its exceptional interior climate and acoustic comfort. Thorough aerodynamic research has minimised turbulence with the roof open, allowing the sound of the road and engine to be enjoyed to the full. The new car therefore delivers a more complete sport driving experience and enhanced enjoyment. In an Fiat 500C Abarth, you can experience all the thrills of a real sports car. With the roof up, performance is on a par with a hard top. When the roof down, the range of sensations and emotions is dramatically extended, and includes all the pleasures of feeling the wind in your hair and the sound of the twin tail pipes.
2011 Fiat 500C Abarth
The roof is electrically operated and slides along guides in the car's sides to let you enjoy your Fiat 500C Abarth all year round. A true object of design, the Fiat 500C Abarth's roof stands out for its elegant, electrically controlled movement and its impressively finished and carefully administered technical features, including a glass rear window and third brake light built into the spoiler. The soft top comes in a choice of two colours (black or titanium grey), to suit the classic Abarth colours as well as the 2 two-tone colour schemes created specially for the car: one overtly sporting (black and race white) and the other in two elegant shades of grey. Finally, a coloured graphic runs around the two-tone body, simultaneously dividing and uniting the two souls of the car: below, all the performance of a true sportster, above, all the elegance of a convertible.
Performance: Abarth tuning
The 500C is a true Abarth, as its 140 HP 1.4 Turbo T-Jet engine clearly shows. Performance is impressive: 0-100 km/h in only 8.1 seconds and a peak torque of 206 at 2000 rpm. An engine that not only delivers thrilling performance but also makes the Fiat 500C Abarth extremely pleasant to drive day in, day out.
The engine is a 4 cylinder, 16 valve, unit of 1,368 cc, fitted with an IHI RHF3-P fixed geometry turbocharger. The unit delivers exciting performance, pushing the car to a top speed of 205 km/h and accelerating it from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds. These exceptional figures are also the result of an overboost function engaged by pressing the "Sport" button, which modifies engine control unit mapping, turbo pressure, and steering wheel loading. Yet despite its true Abarth spirit, the 500C still only consumes 6.5 l/100 km in the combined cycle.
The car's sporting yet flexible engine is also environmentally friendly and already conforms to the strict Euro 5 standards soon to be introduced.
On top of its superb engine, the Fiat 500C Abarth boasts all the technical content of the model from which it is derived, including TTC (Torque Transfer Control) The most obvious innovation, of course, is the race-derived "ABARTH Competizione" gearbox, fitted as standard.
It was 1949 and Karl Abarth officially began marketing the first product, a race-derived gearbox with steering wheel control for the Fiat Topolino, capable of delivering quick gear changes in sporty driving conditions. With the same philosophy, more than 60 years later, the "ABARTH Competizione" is offered as standard on the Fiat 500C Abarth. This electro-hydraulically actuated, 6-speed gearbox is operated by steering wheel paddles and controlled by a system that maximises economy and performance when driven hard.
The innovative MTA-derived (Manual Transmission Automated) system is based on a conventional mechanical gearbox on which the traditional gear lever has been replaced with an actuator electronically controlled by the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) to optimise gear changes and mechanical efficiency. The gearbox can be used in two modes: auto for maximum comfort, and manual for maximum performance. "Sport" mode can be engaged in both gearbox modes and reduces gear shift times.
The new "ABARTH Competizione" gearbox makes driving even more fun thanks to race-derived functions like steering wheel paddle-shifting, just like on a real super-car.
Further confirmation that the 500C is a genuine Abarth comes from the fact that a specific "SS" tuning kit is currently being developed specially for it, offering an even higher level of performance.
The Fiat 500C Abarth is aimed at customers seeking everything the scorpion brand represents in terms of performance and innovation, plus the ultimate in style and versatility.
Safety
The Fiat 500C Abarth incorporates all the safety systems already installed on the Fiat 500 Abarth.
Designed to conform to the strictest standards, the Fiat 500C Abarth is one of the safest vehicles in its class. Stable and effective braking, exhilarating acceleration from a 140 HP engine, and ultra-reliable handling mean that the Fiat 500C Abarth will get you through even the tightest scrapes without you batting an eyelid. The 500C is equipped as standard with 7 airbags (two front, two window and two side airbags plus one driver knee airbag): a record for this class of vehicle. The new version is also equipped with sophisticated technical solutions to maximise active safety and control: these include ABS with EBD (Electronic Braking Distribution), a sophisticated ESP system (Electronic Stability Program), ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) traction control, Hill Holder to facilitate starting off on slopes, and HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) to help with emergency braking.
The Fiat 500C Abarth also features two advanced control systems: "TTC" (Torque Transfer Control) and "GSI" (Gear Shift Indicator). TTC improves the transfer of torque from the engine to the wheels and in particular gives excellent handling on bends, making sports driving safer and more fun than ever. GSI (Gear Shift Indicator) provides a signal on the instrument panel (a LED that flashes five times) to tell you when to change gear. In Normal mode, GSI tells you that changing up will help reduce fuel consumption. In Sport mode, the signal means that changing gear will give you better performance.
Finally, the Fiat 500C Abarth is fitted with dynamic systems and comfort-enhancing equipment to ensure that occupants enjoy luxury as well as safety on all types of journey. Take the suspension system for example. The front suspension is based on independent McPherson struts, while the rear suspension is semi-independent, with an inter-connecting torsion bar. Specially developed by Magneti Marelli, both suspension schemes have been optimised specifically for the Fiat 500C Abarth to ensure superb handling and the highest possible level of comfort.

April 21, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – Expanding on the iconic qualities that have made the original Fiat 500 (Cinquecento) a timeless icon, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio combines open-air freedom and driving enjoyment with beautiful Italian styling, timeless functionality, efficient design and innovative technology for an entirely new generation of drivers.
“Perfectly timed with the warm weather and excitement of spring, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio expands our product lineup while paying homage to the brand’s rich heritage of open-air cabrios that deliver style, value and driving enjoyment,” said Laura Soave, Head of FIAT Brand North America. “The new Fiat 500c has been intelligently tailored for our market – now with an added dose of sunshine and panoramic views at the push of a button.”
More than 50 years of FIAT brand’s successful small-car formula
The Nuova Cinquecento debuted in the summer of 1957 as a cabrio and offered a distinctive canvas roof that opened right to the rear of the vehicle. More than 50 years later, the new 2012 Fiat 500c showcases the brand’s ingenuity to build world-class small cars that ignite a spirit of the times through simple design, beautiful craftsmanship and timeless value. As a result, the Fiat 500 models have continued to surprise and delight customers worldwide.

The new Fiat 500c builds on the Italian styling, all-season performance, fuel-efficient powertrain options, interior comfort for four passengers and more than 35 safety and security features that have made the Fiat 500 hatchback model an international success.
Cleverly designed with a multi-position power-retractable cloth top, fully stamped body-side silhouette and 70 percent less header shake then key competitors – the new Fiat 500c delivers leading interior sound quality (quietest at 45 mph, 70 mph and lowest powertrain noise). In addition, its longer windshield and minimized header design maximize rear-seated passengers’ outward visibility, while minimizing cabin turbulence. And for easy access to the cabrio’s trunk, premium “parallelogram” liftgate hinges conveniently position the liftgate out of the way, while the power-operated cloth top simultaneously retracts.
Metro-friendly proportions, now with an even greater panoramic view
The new 2012 Fiat 500c combines city-friendly proportions, iconic Cinquecento cues and a fully power-operated cloth top — all wrapped in modern Italian styling that conveys simplicity and joy.
At the front, the new Fiat 500c model’s signature “whiskers and logo” face features circular projector headlamps and lower park lamps that resemble the latest Fiat models while paying homage to the distinctive elements of the original Cinquecento in stylistic harmony. To show its road-holding stance, the cabrio’s front fascia features chromed trim and tapers outward toward its large wheel arches, while a horizontal cooling duct adds design character and additional engine cooling.
Differentiating the Fiat 500c from the hatchback model is a slightly longer windshield that is designed to provide passengers with a maximized outward view. In addition, the windshield elegantly conceals the reinforced upper-cross member that ensures the cabrio’s rigid body structure during spirited driving.
From the side, the Fiat 500c’s pillars stand out and present strong arches, while the shape of the soft top provides a more slender silhouette compared with the hatchback version. Below, the black or available chromed belt molding, the signature body-side A-line slopes forward for a dynamic look, while its lateral section features clean surfaces and flared wheel arches to deliver a modern interpretation of the historic Cinquecento. To keep its design simple and modern, the hood-to-fender seam is elegantly cut at the A-line. Filling the wheel wells are four unique wheel designs, all with the “500” logo on the center caps. For more design character, bi-halogen projector headlamps and clear-lens taillamps are visible from the side profile thanks to the way the cabrio’s rounded sides link up to the front and rear. Providing enhanced durability, new lower-sill spats protect the body-side from stone chips.
At the rear of the new Fiat 500c, a roof-mounted and color-matched spoiler improves aerodynamics, while elegantly integrating the center high-mounted stop lamp that cleverly functions with the roof up or down. Separating the premium cloth top from the liftgate is a chrome trim accent that also highlights the cabrio’s width. To keep the rear design clean, the lighting functions are divided vertically following the liftgate’s cutline. Finishing off the iconic styling of the Fiat 500c is a chromed license plate brow, a motif from the original Cinquecento that was inspired by a bicycle saddle.
Intelligent power-cloth top stylistically reinterprets the past
As a contemporary solution to the famous canvas roof on the original Cinquecento, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features a premium dual-layer power-operated cloth top that is designed to deliver all-season driving pleasure with the top up or down. Directly inspired from the historic Cinquecento, the Fiat 500c features a wide glass backlight to retain the same visibility as the hatchback, while its rounded corners are a direct inspiration from the historic model.
With just the push of a button, the Fiat 500c’s power-operated cloth top retracts up to the rear spoiler during speeds up to 60 mph (a midway point can be chosen by pressing the button anytime between). Press the roof button again, and the roof will neatly fold all the way open and tuck neatly behind the rear head restraints (up to 50 mph).
The power-cloth top is also intelligent. When the liftgate is opened for trunk access, the power-operated cloth top automatically retracts back to the rear-spoiler position to avoid any obstruction.
Modern elegance inspired by timeless design features
Even with the top up, the interior of the new 2012 Fiat 500c is airy and roomy, and an environment designed to be comfortable and enjoyable for any destination.
The interior design theme of the new Fiat 500c is an artistic blend of clean lines and conveniently located features inspired by the historic model. Through the available leather-wrapped steering wheel, the cabrio’s single concentric instrument cluster features the speedometer, tachometer and trip computer in a distinct and effective manner. Integrating the latest in portable vehicle navigation for improved route guidance, the instrument cluster features a central LCD monitor that shows pictograms from the TomTom® navigation with BLUE&ME™ Handsfree Communication. These elements, together with a highly integrated center stack and a uniquely designed radio and climate control system, can be ordered in Ivory or Black for an extra level of personalization while also influencing the interior theme to be more sporty or vintage.
The instrument panel of the new Fiat 500c continues the perfect blend of modern simplicity with iconic Italian styling. The upper instrument panel is designed to convey a sense of refinement and elegance and features color-matched exterior accents for added detail. Frequently used vehicle buttons are highlighted with chromed circular rings and are centrally located on the exterior-matched instrument panel trim for a premium appearance. The lower instrument panel and center console highlight the new cabrio’s space utilization with large- and small-sized storage spaces to keep mobile devices at a convenient reach.
A new passenger glove box stores valuable items, while concealing the BLUE&ME Handsfree Communication system’s USB port for instant integration of mobile devices including an iPod. For an integrated look, the new automatic- or manual-transmission shifter and bezel are ergonomically located into the lower instrument panel and feature a mechanically styled shift knob accented in black or leather depending on the model.
The new Fiat 500c’s interior features highly detailed driver and passenger seats available in 12 color and material combinations for maximum personality with an added touch of personalization. Inspired by the historic Cinquecento of the 1960s, the new seats offer the same unique split-color effect: monotone fabric at the bottom and the upper seatback, while the head restraint is matched to the Ivory or Black interior environment. On the Fiat 500c Lounge model, uniquely designed cloth seats provide an upscale look and feel, while premium leather seats are available in traditional Nero (black), a Marrone (brown) hide or ultra-sporty Rosso (red) and deliver a sophisticated look.
Continuing the clean interior design theme, the door panels of the new Fiat 500c feature a contrast between the upper trim upholstered to match the seats, while the surrounding area elegantly incorporates large map pockets and a specially designed space- and weight-saving BOSE® Energy Efficient Series premium audio system. Paying homage to the past, the chromed “hook” door-handle shape recalls one of the most remembered features on the original model while integrating modern-day power door locks.
A small cabrio that lives big
Thanks to careful analysis of the interior cabin, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features the most interior space (76.2 cubic feet) among key competitors, while numerous built-in storage locations quickly and conveniently store mobile devices and travel gear. Even the Fiat 500c’s rear seats deliver the most rear-seat legroom and shoulder room among key competitors, providing comfort for two adults, while delivering the same high-quality comfort and craftsmanship as the driver and front-passenger seats. To highlight the fact that the cabrio is roomy, the rear passengers’ raised and bolstered seat backs are identical to the hatchback model, while even more headroom is present with the dual-layer roof up.
In addition, the luggage compartment is spacious, accommodating 5.4 cubic feet of gear with the seats up and a maximum of 23.4 cubic feet of gear with the 50/50 split-fold rear seats folded down. To more easily load all of the gear, designers maximized the liftgate width and kept the trunk lift-over height low.
Fiat 500c embodies a new vision of technology’s role in the achievement of sustainable mobility
Adapted for U.S. customers, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features an all-new 1.4-liter 16-valve engine with state-of-the-art MultiAir® fuel-saving and emissions-reducing technology – the quietest powertrain versus its competitors. Invented and patented by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), MultiAir provides world-class levels of power, best-in-class 30 mpg city (manual transmission) fuel efficiency, quality and refinement.
Delivering spirited driving and well-suited for the Fiat 500c’s lightweight design and city-friendly size, the efficient and responsive 1.4-liter MultiAir in-line four-cylinder engine provides 101 horsepower (75 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 98 lb.-ft. (133 N•m) of torque at 4,000 rpm. When paired with the five-speed manual transmission, the Fiat 500 delivers up to 38 highway mpg.
Helping to achieve 10 percent greater fuel efficiency and power while decreasing CO2 emissions up to 10 percent compared to engines without the system, the new Fiat 500c features the world’s first Fully Variable Valve Actuation (FVVA) system on a production engine. Also known as MultiAir, this innovative intake-valve system replaces a traditional overhead cam with hydraulic actuation controlled by four, fast-responding, electronic solenoids – delivering instantaneous air-fuel adjustment at any time in the engine cycle for maximum efficiency and power.
eco:Drive™ Application helps to improve driving efficiency
The new 2012 Fiat 500c with state-of-the-art eco:Drive™ Application demonstrates that an automaker’s environmental responsibility should not stop when the car leaves the production line but rather extend into the actual way customers drive their cars.
Fiat’s eco:Drive Application collects all necessary data relating to vehicle efficiency and, through the BLUE&ME™ USB port, transmits it on to any USB memory stick. Once the driver plugs the memory stick into his or her personal computer, the system presents the driver with the Fiat 500c’s detailed environmental performance, including the CO2 emission level for each trip. In addition, FIAT’s eco:Drive Application analyzes the driver’s style and provides recommendations on how to modify his or her driving style to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Originated in Europe, Fiat’s eco:Drive Application has encouraged drivers to set challenges – CO2 reduction targets for specific journeys or over a set period of time. And as part of a global “eco:Ville” community, the system encourages all drivers to come together and pool their fuel and emissions savings to illustrate how many drivers’ individual contributions help the greater good.
All-new six-speed automatic delivers added performance and fuel efficiency
The new 2012 Fiat 500c offers two reliable, robust and sophisticated transmissions uniquely designed for improved efficiency and driving fun.
An all-new six-speed automatic transmission with driver-selectable gear changes provides the new Fiat 500c with smooth shifting and excellent fuel economy. For more engaging driving, the driver can select the “Sport” mode.
Should the driver select ‘Sport’ mode on the instrument panel, the all-new six-speed automatic transmission provides greater driving enjoyment. Through advanced powertrain management, ‘Sport’ mode enables quicker gear changes, a unique throttle map for improved engine responsiveness and allows each gear to be held for longer periods near the redline.
An upgraded five-speed manual transmission features new gear ratios for the U.S. market, allowing the new Fiat 500c to deliver improved fuel efficiency and quicker off-the-line acceleration. For improved durability and pedal feel, a new self-adjusting hydraulic-clutch system is standard on the manual-transmission-equipped Fiat 500c.

Alfa coming back to U.S. with 2 cars and a crossover

Alfa Romeo 4C Concept
Alfa Romeo has been known to be planning a reintroduction to the US market for quite some time now. But due to the complications with the Fiat and Chrysler merger after Chrysler went down, there has been confusion as to when the Italian brand would reintroduce themselves into the US market. The last time Alfa Romeo sold a car in the US was in 1995. But now, with things settling down with the Fiat and Chrysler merger—Fiat owns Alfa Romeo—Alfa has announced that they will officially be returning to the US in late 2012.
Alfa has already hinted at their return to the US by offering limited editions of the 8C Competizione to the US market in very small numbers. For the return in late 2012, Fiat’s CEO Sergio Marchionne said that if they reach the deadline, the first car to make an appearance on US soil since Alfa’s leave in 1995 would the be new 4C limited-edition sports coupe.
Alfa’s full return is planned for about mid-2013 with a compact crossover, a midsize sedan that will most likely be a 159 replacement, and a Guilia model.

Marchionne’s plan originally was to sell 85,000 Alfa Romeos in the US by 2014. However, because of delays with redesigning the Guilia sedan and its larger vehicles, the target is getting harder and harder to reach.
Either way, it’s great to see that the Italian make is reappearing on US soil because as Top Gear UK has taught us: you can’t consider yourself a true petrol head until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo.

Fiat 500 by Gucci
The Gucci name is synonymous with style and elegance, and their influences have far exceeded the high fashion industry. Over the last 90 years the brand have overcome several hurdles, yet their iconic status still remains strong in today’s competitive luxury segment. To celebrate the monumental occasion, teamed up with a traditional Italian automaker, Fiat for special edition cars. Every detail on the vehicle will have the hearts racing from the green and red stripe which runs along the exterior, accompanied by GG wheel nut covers on the aluminum mesh rims. Sliding inside the doors, the interior mirrors the green and red theme on the seats, gearshift, carpet and seatbelt, alongside GG embossed seats and trims. FIAT 500: We Test Drive The New Subcompact

Fiat

More than 25 years ago, Fiat packed up and left the U.S. with a tarnished reputation over quality and capability leaving only the die-hard fans to carry on as they wondered if the company would ever return.
Well guess who just pulled back into town dressed in some hot Italian designs and sporting a small but sleek look. The much anticipated Fiat 500 sub-compact is ready to take on all comers as it looks to attract 50,000 buyers this year alone in the U.S. and Canada.
The Pop, Sport and Lounge models will offer consumers the choice of 14 paint colors including sophisticated Espresso and sizzling Rosso Brillante. Buyers can also choose seat colors, wheels and decals to overlay the outside of their vehicle. There is also an option to individualize your key fob.
There is no getting around it that the smaller size is the first to cause some wonder. But inside the fears of a sub-compact confinement quickly slip away. The Sport provides ample headroom combined with the positioning of the front seats creates a sensation that both driver and passenger are riding high rather than climbing in and out the vehicle. The seating position also eases any feeling of size envy rolling down six lanes of traffic filled with SUVs and pickup trucks.
The Fiat delivers a pleasant surprise in the roominess in the front seats, and the simple touch of giving the driver and arm rest helps to establish two comfortable zones. As a six-foot tall driver, I had no problem hopping behind the wheel or riding shotgun. The instrument panel has a clean look with a half-circle speedometer that tucks nicely under the steering wheel.
Instead of a traditional center console cutting the car in two, the 500’s lower instrument panel –shaped almost like a guitar pick – holds the styled shifting knob, window controls and heating and air conditioning.
Although the back seat can accommodate two adults, this car is aimed straight at urban dwellers who are looking for some style during their commute to work or on grocery runs, rather than piling everyone in for a family weekend trip. The hatchback space is big enough to fit two carry-on roller bag suitcases side-by-side. Folding down the seats gives just enough space to fit a golf bag.
On the road, the 500 holds the twisting curves while giving a surprisingly quiet ride absent of wind whistles and the vibration of pavement. The large sunroof has a pull-out screen although the wind noise can get loud, especially on a windy day.
The Fiat 500s begin hitting showrooms in February. About 135 dealers are now working to prepare their Fiat stores, which will look more like a styling studio complete with an espresso bar. Some dealers are even allowing local artists to hang their works in the studio just to add some flare.
The Pop starts at $15,500 – not including the destination charge – while the Sport is $17,500 and the Lounge is $19,500. Buyers who want to totally individualize their vehicle will have to wait four to six weeks from order. The automatic version delivers 27 miles per gallon in the city and 34 highway while the manual offers 30 in the city and 38 on the highway.

FIAT 500 by Gucci

Fiat 500 by Gucci Revives Long, if Inglorious Tradition

A European version of the 2012 Fiat 500 by Gucci. A version for the American market will have its debut during New York Fashion Week.

For all the brand’s recent strides upmarket, Hyundai does not offer color-matched Salvatore Ferragamo luggage. Maserati, however, does. Chevrolet has yet to affix headliners embossed with the Versace logo on the roof of a Malibu — perhaps because Lamborghini beat them to it.
With brand stewardship being a multibillion-dollar cottage industry, few car buyers would expect volume-oriented automakers to persuade chic nameplates into a working relationship. But as the Fiat 500 by Gucci reminded us this week, there once was a time when Italian fashion houses and humble, workaday transportation went together like prosecco and frozen O.J.
The Fiat 500 by Gucci is scheduled to be unveiled on Sept. 8 during New York Fashion Week, marking the fourth occasion that the Italian brand has worked in some capacity with a car company. Laura Soave, the head of Fiat in North America, said that the special edition “amplified the Italian style” of the supermini. Given Fiat’s need to increase awareness of its product at every level of the marketplace, the pairing seems sensible. Gucci, meanwhile, can rest assured knowing it has associated its name with a new totem of urban chic, however accessibly priced it may be.
But as the fossil record shows, Gucci was not always so calculating.

The 1972 AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon bore the fashion house’s signature green-red-green center stripe down its vinyl seatbacks. Aldo Gucci, the house’s president, pushed into the American market with such pairings to raise brand awareness. Now, 40 years later, Fiat is leveraging Gucci’s name to do the same. (Fashion does have a sense of irony.)
A Cadillac dealer in Miami collaborated with Mr. Gucci later in the decade, replacing the traditional crest hood ornament on the 1979 Seville with the Gucci double-G motif. The special-edition cars were ordered directly from the factory and shipped to Miami, where they were painted either black, white or deep brown, and fitted with landau-style tops in Gucci’s traditional plaid print. Inside, the signature touches continued on the head and armrests, and a fanciful Gucci nameplate was affixed to the dashboard above the glovebox.
In 1989, Lincoln branched out from its stable of Bill Blass, Valentino, Pucci, Versace and Givenchy special editions with a plan to offer a Gucci Series Town Car. The vehicle, however, was never produced.
The 500 by Gucci is already sold in Europe, where the redesigned 500 has been colonizing urban cores since 2008. Fiat did not say if it would shuttle Fashion Week attendees around Manhattan in the special-edition supermini for free, like Volkswagen did last year with its redesigned 2011 Jetta. Surely, squeezing into a piece of Italian couture would not be such a novelty for many passengers.
